Purchase: I purchased the Futura putter at Las Vegas Golf & Tennis in Las Vegas, Nevada for a retail price of $299. Why I purchased the putter is a combination of factors: (1) I am an obsessive/compulsive purchaser of golf equipment and have had many putters over the years; (2) I am always looking for the perfect putter; and (3) I practiced putting with the putter in the store for three weeks (including a left handed model when all the right handed models were sold out) and I could no longer avoid the pleasure of using it.
Pros: This putter has incredible sensitivity and feel. Lag putting, close range accuracy, consistency, and effortless true rolls are all things I trust, value, and rely upon when I stand over the ball on the green. Putts from the fringe are reliable and hold the line well, also. I like the fact that the weighting promotes a smooth stroke and allows me to focus on the putt, not the putter.
Many golfers have asked to try the putter around the practice green and even on the course. Every one of them has made a remark about how good the putter feels and several mentioned that it promotes a positive stroke. A one handicapper once asked to stroke it and immediately nailed a putt from 72 feet (we walked it off!) on his first time using the putter. That was on the first hole and he asked to try it another half dozen times during the round.
Cons: I first saw the putter on TV, being used by pros on the PGA, European, and LPGA tours. I thought it looked bizarre. When it first became available at Las Vegas Golf & Tennis, I held it in my hands and still thought it looked bizarre.
I dislike the fact that it and its cover hogs so much space in my golf bag. On the green I was initially distracted by all the lines, circles, and angles of the putter. During my learning experiences with the putter, it sometimes felt too light. For a time, I was self-conscious about its size versus the "standard" putters. It attracted so much attention, I felt pressure to sink every putt so that I was deserving of owning it.
Futura Quality: I have several Scotty Cameron and Bettinardi putters. I love high quality in golf clubs--in fact, in all products I purchase. This putter has outstanding construction and quality. It should have high quality for the price, and it does--it is flawless.
Review & Rating Summary: I want to like what I see when I look at the putter and ball on the green. I want to stroke the ball and have it travel the line I envisoned when I lined up the putt. I want the ball to travel the distance I feel in my shoulders, my hands, and in my mind's eye when I stroke through the ball. After four weeks of using this putter, I believe it will do all of the above every time I use it--on fast greens, bumpy or slow greens, and at all distances.
I have learned to focus on the part of the putter directly behind the blade that touches the ball, and I have become deadly with it. I have always been a good putter, and this putter helps me be at my best more often. My only regret is that with only 12 to 14 putts aside, I don't get to use it as often as I would like. After all, golf is the only game I know of where we spend so much money and time on equipment that we want to use as few times as possible per round.
