Fees and Costs associated with this course:
Typical green/cart fee is $70 but there is a coupon in most of the Grand Strand papers and discount books for $20 off. Range balls are $3 and rental of a course specific GPS is $5 (definitely worth the price)
History of the golfer who played this course:
single digit handicapper, been playing for 20 years. Driving and short gam are the better parts of my game.
Specific likes about this course:
This is the #62 rated public course you can play according to Golf Digest. Nice layout, winding back among lots of trees and marsh and several hols along the Shallotte River. very challenging course with 5 sets of tee. Course will require hitting a variety of shots with all the clubs in your bag, not ust driver/wedge. Nice holes is #5, par 3 all over marsh. Not long but wind affects club selection.
Housing/OB never really come into play which is nice. Very scenic and the holes move around a lot, not just a lot of straight tee to green holes.
Many shots over marsh or water which makes it more interesting that a lot of other courses.
Dislikes about this course:
Ok, for the #62 rated course I sort of expected a very well manicured course with a nice 1st and 2nd cut of rough and great greens. The course is nice and the fairways we usually in good condition, but the rough varied in terms of how well it was being kept and the greens were not in great shape.
The course ran out of range balls which was stupid given the course was not packed.
I also don't like that the scorecard doesn't show you a picture of the hole layouts, neither do the signs on the holes. So unless you brought your own pictures (from the website) you either hit blind shots and hope you hit in the right direction or you have to rent the GPS from teh club house.
And there was no putting green. They had it closed as they were testing a new green grass that might be putout on the course next year.
Is this course worth the fees?
Overall, with the coupon, this is a very good value. Most of the Grand Strand courses (course from southern Myrtle Beach up into southern NC) are at least $50 most days and more into the weekend. I would definitely rent the GPS. It's only $5 and you need something that shows you the course/hole layouts
19th Hole: What extra amenities did this course offer?
There is a grill./restaurant and a nice club house with cloths, clubs, balls, etc. They also have a cart lady that brings around snacks and beverages.
Summary and opinions of this golf course:
overall, glad I played this course. It's a nice track with a lot of challenges and very picturesque. Find the coupon and it makes it a much easier decision.
