Black Sheep Golf Club ranked among America's best courses

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. -- For the fourth consecutive year, Golfweek Magazine has ranked Black Sheep Golf Club among America's Best 100 Modern Courses, according to information published in its March 8 issue. The magazine ranks Black Sheep 56th among the top-100 Modern Courses in 2008, with "modern" defined as any course built after 1960. The private club opened in 2002 but its inspired design and "golf-only" principle make it a throwback to the origins of the game.

"We are honored and proud that Black Sheep Golf Club again has been recognized by Golfweek as one of America's Best 100 Modern Courses," said Black Sheep developer and club president Vincent Solano. "Our course designer, David Esler, brought tremendous thought and creativity to this project and he has provided our members a pure golf experience reminiscent of a bygone era."

The only other Chicago-area course named in the Best 100 Modern category was Butler National GC in Oakbrook (No. 74). Six Chicago-area courses were ranked among the 100 Best Classic (pre-1960) courses: Chicago Golf Club (No. 15), Shoreacres GC (No. 27), Olympia Fields, North Course (No.42); Medinah CC (No. 55); Skokie CC (No. 78), and Beverly CC (No. 91). Black Sheep represents golf in its purest state. Located on a 285-acre former farmstead, the 27-hole facility has a 6,200-square-foot, white, barn-style clubhouse in which most of the space is devoted to a sizeable and well-appointed locker room and a great room/bar with a small pro shop.

The men-only club also is defined by what it does not have: No adjacent real estate development. No hotel. No swimming pool. No tennis courts. No white-table-cloth dining room or social calendar. And not kitchen. Just a bar, a bartender, a refrigerator for sandwiches and beverages, and a grill on the porch should members want to cook a steak after a long day on the links. In addition, there is a small lodge onsite where up to eight members and/or guests can stay overnight. (The club has a number of national members). Located west of downtown Chicago near the intersection of Interstate 88 and Illinois Route 47, Black Sheep was designed in the spirit of such classic inland links as Chicago Golf Club, Shinnecock Hills, Prairie Dunes, and Sand Hills.

In addition to the three nines - each of which is par 36 and measures from 3,300 to 3,800 yards - the facility features a world class driving range, short game practice area, and a two-acre putting green. The Golfweek ranking is based on evaluations of holes one through 18. "The basic tenet of the place is strategic design," Esler said. "Vince and I agreed from the very beginning that strategy is the foundation of any great golf course and that is the principle that governed the project."

The course is characterized by unusually wide fairways that give players of varying abilities several risk/reward options off the tee. The more risk a player takes on his tee shot in terms of hitting it in the direction of the primary hazard (water, prairie grass, fescue, wetlands, etc.) the greater his reward for a good shot - i.e., a second shot that provides a better angle of approach to the green, better visibility of the next shot, and/or a shorter approach to the green.

Black Sheep's naturally rolling prairie provides for significant elevation change and a feeling of movement throughout the golf course. The land's naturally undulating terrain and Esler's muscular bunkering style combined with the varied color palette of the properties native prairie grasses give the course its character and definition. Moreover, the lack of tree protection means the notorious Chicago area winds are a factor during most every round at Black Sheep.

"Solano turned Esler loose to create a wide expanse of playing surface, evocative of Prairie Dunes in terms of native grasses but unlike anything in the Chicago area," Golfweek architecture editor Bradley S. Klein once wrote when describing Black Sheep.

Black Sheep is unique for other reasons, including:

- Black Sheep is a member-owned equity club limited to 250 members.
- The current initiation fee is $90,000 for a regular member. National (non-resident) memberships are $15,000 with annual dues of $1,200.
- Unlike a typical country club, Black Sheep has no minimum spending requirements for food and beverage. Also, there are no cart fees, no tee times, and no fees for club storage, driving range or the locker room. The club has a strong caddie program and special playing privileges for the sons and sons-in-law of members.
- Black Sheep GC is a friend of the environment. The club has planted 140 acres of native prairie grasses and has created 15 acres of wetlands in a successful effort to restore the farmland to the pre-settlement landscape of Native Americans. The wetland restoration and the large scale planting of natural prairie grasses provide habitats for birds, animals, and insects. Such plantings also provide the surrounding area with a high quality system of storm water management and a better ecosystem. The golf course could become the standard by which environmentally superior golf courses are constructed in the future.

Jug Mountain Ranch Golf Course in McCall and Falcon Crest Golf Club in Kuna

Two new courses – Jug Mountain Ranch Golf Course in McCall and Falcon Crest Golf Club in Kuna – have been added to the Idaho Golf Trail for 2008 bringing to 10 the number of member courses.

With the addition of these two courses the Trail has been reformatted from two distinct “loops” (North and South) to three:

· Central – Osprey Meadows at Tamarack Resort, Jug Mountain, Whitetail Club and MeadowCreek
· Southern – Sun Valley Resort, BanBury and Falcon Crest
· Northern – Circling Raven Golf Club, Coeur d’Alene Resort Course and StoneRidge

The reformatting is designed to enhance visitors’ trips (i.e. more options, more proximity of Trail courses, more manageable logistically and therefore enjoyable, etc.).

As you know, there was a time when golf in the Pacific Northwest was largely confined to a few good to great courses. Those days are long gone however thanks to a proliferation of highly regarded courses in the region.

These include those at Bandon Dunes, Chambers Bay, Circling Raven, Osprey Meadows at Tamarack Resort, and many others.

Beside the addition of two new courses to the Idaho Golf Trail, some of the highlights of the IGT include:
·
The debut of Sun Valley’s new course, which is quasi-revolutionary from a real estate perspective. Whereas most resort courses are built in valleys with real estate and resort lodging stealing the best vantage points, Sun Valley’s new nine sits in the premier real estate location – on high and providing panoramic views. This strategy stems from the owner (Earl Holding) wanting to continue Sun Valley’s legacy of building a resort destination which preserves the physical beauty, design and aura which has appealed to discriminating ski-and-golf resort travelers for decades (i.e. it’s not about a quick buck). The new course offers long-range sight lines, spectacular views of the Sawtooths, Boulder and other surrounding mountains, and a routing which will require golfers to hit shots at the top range of their abilities to negotiate well the titillating layout but with multiple tee boxes to find the right challenge for golfers of varying ability. The new nine holes will debut this summer (with its second nine planned to follow in 2009) and was designed by Donald J. Knott – of Knott Brooks Linn Golf Course Design Group out of California – the lead architect during the Robert Trent Jones Jr. design firm’s renovation of Sun Valley’s original 18 holes in 1978-79. The new course at Sun Valley complements the existing course there, which is located in a valley with Trail Creek, narrow fairways and mature Cottonwood trees providing ample defense of the course. In addition, Sun Valley will debut its new clubhouse and Nordic Center this summer (and a Symphony Pavilion), which will showcase mountain peak and meadow views, an expansive new practice facility, and the new, 18-hole putting course. Named “Sawtooths” in tribute to the mountains of the same name which grace the area and because it includes a series of mounds which reflect them in miniature, Sawtooths is patterned after the putting course at St. Andrews (“Himalayas”). General Manager Wallace Huffman tells a great story about how during a trip to St. Andrews he and his travelmates were enjoined in a putting match by some Scottish natives on theHimalayas and the drama and formality of the match (after cocktails while wearing sports jackets). It struck a chord with him and he envisions a similar reception/venue at the Sun Valley’s Sawtooths.

· The addition of Jug Mountain to the IGT is a terrific news for avid golf travelers as it brings into play Osprey Meadows at Tamarack Resort (RTJ Jr.) and Whitetail Club (Andy North-Roger Packard), both which are with 30 minutes of one another. and Jug Mountain. All three offer immaculate conditions, exemplary customer service and inspired course designs set amid spectacular mountain, meadow and lake scenery, and all three are working up stay-and-play packages now that Jug Mountain has been added to the IGT.

· Circling Raven Golf Club and Coeur d’Alene Resort Course continue to garner acclaim as one of the best tandems of resort courses for golf getaways in North America given their proximity, apples to oranges layouts (so different yet complementary), exemplary customer service and value-priced stay-and-play packages.

Osprey Meadows at Tamarack Resort Garners More National Honors

TAMARACK, Idaho - Osprey Meadows at Tamarack Resort, the Robert Trent Jones, Jr. signature golf course at America's newest all-season destination, has been named Idaho's best public-access course in Golf Digest's annual state-by-state ranking of America's Greatest Courses.

It is relatively rare for a new course to be rated so highly by Golf Digest; this is just Osprey Meadows' second season.

Golf Digest's biennial best-in-state rankings are determined by the magazine's course rating panelists, a group of more than 800 low-handicap golfers who rated thousands of courses across the United States on a 10-point scale in various criteria to come up with the best courses in each state.

In January, Golf Digest singled out Osprey Meadows as "America's Best New Public Course" $75 and Over for 2006 - also known as the upscale category - which places it in the company of previous "best-new upscale" winners Pacific Dunes, Bandon Dunes and the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island.

To put Osprey Meadows' honor in perspective, each of those three courses are now ranked on Golf Digest's "America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses" - there are roughly 17,000 golf courses in the world, the vast majority in America - which is the gold standard for best-of-course lists in the world.

"For Golf Digest to recognize the spectacular design and poetic beauty of Osprey Meadows not just once, but twice, during our inaugural season is truly an honor," says Alfredo Miguel, Tamarack Chairman. "As this course matures, the richness of its ever-changing character will continue to entice all levels of golfers to come and enjoy a truly unique golf experience."

Osprey Meadows also was just named to the elite Zagat Survey 2007/08 Guide to America's Top Golf Courses. Zagat is the world's leading provider of consumer survey-based leisure content.

Among the most thorough rating guides in all of golf, ZAGAT covers 1,075 of the best courses in the United States, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Courses in the guide are rated based on the responses of more than 6,250 reviewers who play more than 560,000 rounds annually. Strength of layout, value, overall quality, facility and service standards are taken into consideration.

In recognizing Osprey Meadows, Zagat Survey noted the draw of activities beyond golf which drew people to the course at Tamarack Resort, stating "… many courses have taken to offering the complete resort experience. Osprey Meadows (ID), for example, is tucked away at the Tamarack Resort and offers hiking, fishing and rafting after the 19th hole."

Indeed, Tamarack Resort offers multiple stay-and-play packages throughout the season for golfers, including spa and lodging combinations. The unique convergence of mountain, meadow and lake amenities at the all-season destination means activities abound beyond the fairways.

Osprey Meadows will open for the 2007 season May 19 and continue through October. For information on booking stay-and-play packages or tee times, call 877.TAM.RESORT.

About Osprey Meadows

Award-winning Osprey Meadows, a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. signature course, lies in a sweeping meadow between the forest of the steep-rising Tamarack Mountain and shimmering Lake Cascade. The course borders a bird sanctuary and is home to a wide array of wildlife including osprey, bald eagles, and sandhill cranes. While showcasing panoramic views of mountain, meadow and lake, the course is spread over 400-acres of varied terrain featuring rolling meadows, creek crossings and forested holes. The par-72 course utilizes multiple tees at each hole to provide a variety of lengths - from 7,319 for experienced players to 5,003 for more casual players. Osprey Meadows is at an elevation of 4,800 feet—ideal for carrying the ball and providing a longer mountain golf season, yet eliminating the need for acclimation. Golf accolades bestowed on Osprey Meadows to date include:

• Best New Public Course $75 and over for 2006, Golf Digest (Jan. 2007)
• No. 2 Course in Idaho' (No. 1 public course), Golf Digest (May 2007)
• Top 10 New Courses You Can Play, GOLF Magazine (Jan. 2007)
• America's Top Golf Courses, Zagat Survey 2007/2008 (March 2007)
• Region's Best New Courses, Seattle Metropolitan (April 2007)

About Tamarack Resort

A key element of the Tamarack community is The Club at Tamarack for homeowners, their families and guests. New Jersey's Pine Valley Named No. 1 Course In The Country; Tops Golf Digest's 2007 Ranking Of America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses

NEW YORK, NY—Pine Valley Golf Club in New Jersey remains the No.1 course in Golf Digest's biennial survey of America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses.

Established in 1966, America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses is the oldest ranking in the game and is based on the extensive play and scrutiny of thousands of courses by Golf Digest's course evaluation panel. The America's 100 Greatest package, which also includes America's 100 Greatest Public Courses and the Best Courses in Each State, appears in the May 2007 issue (on newsstands April 10).

America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses—including all new rankings, supplemental stories, methodology, the newcomers and drop-offs to the list and a detailed account of how every course scored in all judging criteria—can be viewed now at www.golfdigest.com/100greatest.

Behind No.1 Pine Valley is Shinnecock Hills G.C. of Southampton, N.Y., which edged-out Augusta National (the No. 2 course in 2005). The famed Masters venue dropped to No. 3 on this year's list. Rounding out the top ten are: No. 4 Cypress Point Club, No. 5 Oakmont C.C., No. 6 Pebble Beach Golf Links, No. 7 Merion G.C. (East), No. 8 Winged Foot G.C. (West), No. 9 Seminole G.C. and No. 10 Crystal Downs CC., its first appearance in the First 10. Augusta National, Cypress Point and Crystal Downs were all designed by Alister Mackenzie. It's the first time since 1975 that one architect has landed three courses in the Top 10.

According to Ron Whitten, Golf Digest Senior Editor, Architecture, "No club is immune from the quest for perfection. Some are renovated to lure a major championship. Others are retro fitted with the latest irrigation and drainage. Some are restored to reclaim the luster of an original architect. Such efforts aren't done primarily in search of a ranking. But an improved ranking on America's 100 Greatest is often the result."

Because America's 100 Greatest is dominated by private courses to which few readers have ready access, in 2003 Golf Digest established a ranking of America's 100 Greatest Public Courses to showcase the top courses in the nation that are open to all golfers.

Pebble Beach Golf Links ranked No. 1 among America's 100 Greatest Public in 2003 and 2005, and remains there again this year. The remainder of the Top 10 are: No. 2, Pacific Dunes in Oregon; No. 3, Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort & C.C.'s No. 2 Course; No. 4, the Straits Course at Whistling Straits G.C. in Wisconsin; No. 5, the Black Course at New York's Bethpage State Park G.C.; No. 6, Shadow Creek in North Las Vegas, Nev.; No. 7, Bandon Dunes, sister course to Pacific Dunes in Oregon; No. 8, The Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, S.C.; No. 9, Prince Course on Kauai, Hawaii; and No. 10, Arcadia Bluffs G.C. in Michigan. The Ocean Course was recently recognized by Golf Digest as the nation's toughest course in its February, 2007 ranking of America's 50 Toughest Golf Courses, proving that the best public courses are not necessarily pushovers.

To determine America's 100 Greatest, America's 100 Greatest Public and the Best Courses in Each State, thousands of courses were played and evaluated by Golf Digest's course evaluation panel of over 800 men and women golfers, which include club professionals, course superintendents and low-handicap amateurs. All panelists travel and play at their own expense and on their own timetables.

The courses were judged on various criteria: Shot Values, Resistance to Scoring, Design Variety, Memorability, Aesthetics, Conditioning and Ambience. After the panelists submitted their evaluations, Golf Digest averaged the scores of the categories and totaled the averages to determine the overall rankings. A course must be two years old to be considered for America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses and at least a year old for any other ranking.

The Six Additions to America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses for 2007-2008

No. 63 - Lost Dunes G.C., Bridgman, MI (Tom Doak, designer.)
No. 71 - Calusa Pines G.C.., Naples, FL (Michael Hurdzan/Dana Fry.)
No. 77 - Monterey Peninsula C.C., (Shore) Pebble Beach, CA (Bob Baldock/Mike Stranz.)
No. 83 - Tullymore G.C., Stanwood, MI (Jim Engh.)
No.92 - Sycamore Hills G.C., Fort Wayne, IN (Jack Nicklaus.)
